Between Me and You. On the attitude of the audio documentary maker.

As a creator of podcasts and performances, Katharina Smets illustrates her journey from an autobiographical narrator to an invisible director and back again. In this essay, she illustrates how she allows both to exist in her work. By exploring the history of the genre and through conversations with fellow makers and her own experiences, she describes how an open and transformative dialogue can take place. Between the ‘I’ of the maker and the ‘You’ of the interviewee, between the final work and the listener.

This publication is the culmination of Katharina Smets’ doctoral research The Auditory Imagination, conducted between 2017 and 2020 at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (AP Hogeschool, within the Uitvoeringspraktijk in Perspectief research group) and at Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (University of Antwerp).
